Recommended Sunnah Prayers (Sunnah Muakkad) and Why We Should Strive to Perform Them

The Significance of Prayer in Islam

Prayer (Salat) is one of the five pillars of Islam, obligatory for every Muslim. It is the most important and beloved act of worship to Allah SWT. Through prayer, we communicate with Allah, praise Him, seek forgiveness, and ask for His help.

Beyond the Obligatory: Recommended Sunnah Prayers

Did you know that in addition to the five daily obligatory prayers, there are highly recommended sunnah prayers known as Sunnah Muakkad?

What are Sunnah Muakkad Prayers?

Sunnah Muakkad are additional sunnah prayers performed alongside the five obligatory prayers. They are highly encouraged because Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) consistently performed them and rarely missed them except under unavoidable circumstances.

The Types of Sunnah Muakkad Prayers:

  • 2 Raka'at before Fajr (dawn) prayer.
  • 4 Raka'at before Dhuhr (noon) prayer.
  • 2 Raka'at after Dhuhr prayer.
  • 2 Raka'at after Maghrib (sunset) prayer.
  • 2 Raka'at after Isha (night) prayer.

These prayers can be performed at home or in the mosque, although the sunnah before Fajr is preferably performed in the mosque.

Why Should We Perform Sunnah Muakkad Prayers?

Sunnah Muakkad prayers offer numerous benefits in this world and the hereafter. Here are some reasons why we should strive to perform them:

  • Following the Sunnah of the Prophet: These prayers reflect the practices of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), the best role model for Muslims. By following his sunnah, we seek Allah's love and pleasure, and earn multiplied rewards.
  • Perfecting Our Obligatory Prayers: Our obligatory prayers might have shortcomings or errors. Sunnah prayers can help erase these shortcomings and enhance the quality of our obligatory prayers.
  • A Heavenly Reward: Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, "Whoever prays twelve rak'ahs in a day and night will have a house built for him in Paradise."
  • Seeking Allah's Protection: The Prophet (PBUH) emphasized the protection offered by these prayers: "Whoever prays two rak'ahs before Fajr with humility, Allah will protect him from the Hellfire." He also said, "Whoever prays four rak'ahs before Dhuhr will be safeguarded from the Dajjal's (anti-Christ) mischief."
  • Worldly Blessings and Well-being: Prayer brings blessings and well-being in this life. The Prophet (PBUH) said, "Whoever prays two rak'ahs after Dhuhr will be granted blessings in his sustenance." He also said, "Whoever prays two rak'ahs after Maghrib will be granted health and safety."

These are just a few reasons why we should make an effort to perform Sunnah Muakkad prayers. May this article inspire us to be more diligent and consistent (istiqomah) in performing these additional prayers. Ameen.
