Pursuing Knowledge vs. Chasing Wealth: Which Is More Noble?

Dear Sahabat Al Lathif, let us reflect together on two crucial aspects of life: knowledge (ilmu) and wealth (harta). Both play significant roles, but which one takes precedence? Let’s explore this wisely.

Pursuing Knowledge vs. Chasing Wealth: Which Is More Noble?

1. Knowledge as a Prophet’s Legacy, Wealth as Pharaoh’s Inheritance

Knowledge is the light bestowed by prophets and messengers. In contrast, wealth, while providing comfort, often becomes a source of temptation and greed. Remember, knowledge is the nobler inheritance.

2. Knowledge Guards, Wealth Must Be Guarded

Knowledge serves as your protector. When you acquire knowledge, it guards you. Conversely, wealth requires your attention and vigilance. Knowledge grows through practice, while wealth diminishes with every expenditure.

3. Knowledge as a Ruler, Wealth as the Ruled

Knowledge provides guidance and laws. Wealth, though possessed, remains subject to laws and regulations. Knowledge imparts wisdom, while wealth merely becomes an object affected by legalities.

4. Loving the Learned Is Part of Faith

Loving those who possess knowledge (the ulama) is integral to faith. This love draws us closer to Allah. Therefore, let us honor and cherish the scholars who have bequeathed knowledge to us.

5. Knowledge Commands Obedience and Lives On

A knowledgeable person is respected during their lifetime and remembered for their goodness after death. Knowledge bestows an everlasting legacy, while wealth fades with the world’s demise.

6. Knowledge Illuminates the Human Heart

Knowledge is not merely information; it is the light that brightens hearts. It brings tranquility and wisdom. Wealth, despite providing comfort, can never illuminate the human heart as knowledge does.

So, Sahabat Al Lathif, let us diligently seek knowledge. Make it your steadfast companion, for it holds the key to blessings and salvation.
